It turns out one of the biggest what if moments in WWE history nearly played out in 2010Vickie Guerrero was this close to becoming Womens Champion.
Former WWE star Layla dropped the info during her appearance on the Developmentally Speaking podcast, revealing that Vickie was originally booked to win the Womens Championship in a match that ultimately saw Layla and Michelle McCools LayCool duo take the belts off Beth Phoenix in a handicap match.
If you watch when I won the actual Womens Championship, it was in Beth Phoenixs hometown. It was against her. It was a handicap match. Initially, it was supposed to be Vickie Guerrero winning the title. It wasnt supposed to go to me at all, Layla revealed.
According to Layla, it was WWE veteran Finlay who had her back. He apparently pushed for her to win the gold after seeing how hard shed been grinding on the live event circuit.
But because I was on live events all the time, I believe Fit Finlay pushed for me and coached me to get the gold, she said. So, when he told me, hes like, Hey, youre winning the title tonight. I was like, Okay. The whole day, just like, Okay. And hes like, No, for real. And I just did not believe him.
Even when walking through Gorilla Position and during the match, Layla was convinced the finish would change.
Im waiting the whole time. Im waiting even when we go out from Gorilla. Im waiting in the match for someone to go, Layla, dont fall out the ring. Like, you know what I mean? Im just waiting. And it just, I won, she added.
Layla went on to have a memorable run as both Womens and Divas Champion, but its wild to think how different things couldve gone if WWE had pulled the trigger on Vickie Guerrero instead.
