Jeff Cobb just shut down rumors of an NJPW exit in the best way possibleby winning gold. Despite weeks of speculation linking him to WWE, the powerhouse athlete showed hes not going anywhere just yet.
At the April 5 Sakura Genesis event, Cobb and his United Empire partner Callum Newman captured the IWGP Tag Team Championships, defeating Tetsuya Naito and Hiromu Takahashi in under 11 minutes. This win marks Cobbs third reign with the IWGP Tag Titles, having previously held them twice in 2022.
This latest title win comes on the heels of serious WWE buzz. Back on March 13, Fightful reported that Cobb was being referred to internally as a free agent, with one WWE source claiming his name even appeared on the companys internal roster. However, that detail couldnt be verify.
Shortly after, Dave Meltzer added fuel to the fire by reporting that there have been contract talks between Cobb and WWE, though nothing had been confirmed at the time.
What had fans really talking was Cobbs unexpected loss in the New Japan Cup quarterfinals, which only intensified rumors that he might be WWE-bound. But that narrative shifted fast with his championship win just days later.
Cobb, a former Olympian, has long been seen as a top-tier talent with crossover appeal. While he previously said he planned to stick with NJPW, the WWE interest remains very realand now hes holding championship gold while everyone waits to see whats next.
