Alexander Zverev didn't hold back after his latest disappointing defeat, ripping his level as "terrible" and admitting that even he can't understand anymore what's causing his problems.
On Tuesday, the top seed saw his Monte Carlo Masters campaign end after only one match. And just as was the case in some of the previous weeks, he made a solid start but then disappeared from the court. Matteo Berrettini used that to his advantage and came back to win 2-6 6-3 7-5.
Although 2021 Wimbledon runner-up Berrettini was always going to be a tricky opponent, Zverev entered the match as the favorite - especially on clay. With this defeat, the German fell to a mere 6-6 record since the Australian Open.

What was decisive is that I played the first set very well, but once I lost my serve in the second set, I started playing 10 times worse. My ball is very slow, I cant move anything. I stopped hitting the ball, and this has been the same story for the past few months. Nothing changes, always the same. So its me who lost the match, once again. I thought my level was terrible, but thats just my opinion," the world No. 2 said.
Zverev: I have been trying to understand some things but even I don't know anymore
Francisco Cerundolo, Francisco Comesana, Learner Tien, Tallon Griekspoor and Arthur Fils have also beaten the German since the Australian Open. As you can see, all of those were matches that the world No. 2 should have won.

I have no idea whats happening to me right now. I have been trying to understand it for several months, but I dont even know what to say anymore," Zverev added.
After Jannik Sinner was suspended, the German was in pole position to reach the top spot. But those chances are now gone.
Zverev will be hoping to find some momentum and rhythm at the Madrid Masters, where he is a two-time champion.
