CM Punk has laced up his boots for some legendary matches over the years, but if you thought his iconic Money in the Bank 2011 showdown with John Cena was his personal favoriteyoud be wrong.
In a new interview with Metro, Punk revealed that the real match that sticks with him happened almost two years later, on the February 25, 2013 episode of WWE Raw, when Cena put his WrestleMania 29 title shot against The Rock on the line.
And Punk? He wasnt in a good mood that night. I had the flu, I had a fever, and I was just f**ing angry,* Punk recalled. I said, Well, this is the main event of WrestleMania. I know you guys are doing that, but thats what this is. So nobody could tell me anything, I did what I wanted.
He went on to say, Thats probably the best match in my career. There was just an energy, and there was a buzz in the building. I think part of that is because I was just fueled by anger at that point in my career. It got me out of bed.
While fans still praise his classic 2011 battle in Chicago, Punk is clear: it was the emotion, exhaustion, and pure defiance in that 2013 Raw match that brought out the best in him.
Now, CM Punk is once again in a main event spotlight, set to clash with Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns in a massive Triple Threat match at WrestleMania 41. And if history is any indicator, a fired-up Punk is exactly the version WWE fans want to see.
