Lex Lugers long-overdue WWE Hall of Fame induction is finally happening at WrestleMania 41 weekendbut the moment hes dreaming of may still be in jeopardy thanks to behind-the-scenes politics.
In an emotional sit-down with Bill Apter, Luger revealed that he personally requested for both Sting and Diamond Dallas Page to stand by his side during the ceremony. They can spot me, so if I try walking and I start to fall, I can have my two best buddies spot me on my shoulders, Luger said. There is your money shot. Sting on one side, Dallas on the other making sure I dont fall.
But theres a catchand its a big one. Sting is still under AEW contract, which means WWE would need to formally request permission from Tony Khan. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, that hasnt happened yet. Meltzer reported, As best we can tell, neither Sting nor WWE has contacted Tony Khan, who would have to approve it. Even more frustratingLuger hasnt received an answer from WWE either. Luger claims that he asked WWE for Sting and DDP and never heard back, Meltzer added.
So whats the holdup? Meltzer suggests that WWE may be dragging its feet on purpose, possibly waiting until the last minute to either force a quick decision or shift public blame. There is the P.R. perspective in that if the ask is not at the last minute, the risk that the nature of the negotiations wouldnt come out before the event is lessened, he wrote. The implication? If Sting doesnt show, fans are more likely to blame AEW and Tony Khan than WWEunless its revealed that WWE never made a serious offer.
Luger himself summed it up best: Ideally, obviously, I would love to see both of those guys up there with me. That would be huge for me and be special for the fans.
Now, its up to WWE and AEW to make it happen. But if they dont? Expect chants for Stingand some serious heat on whoever fans believe dropped the ball.
Do you think WWE should have already reached out to Tony Khan? Or is AEW responsible for making the call? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comment section below.
