Kylian Mbappe will serve a one-game suspension after being sent off in Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Alaves.

After the on-field referee only handed out a yellow card, a VAR review quickly determined that Mbappe's ugly challenge was deserving of a straight red, with many quickly calling for a significant suspension for the Frenchman.

It later emerged that referee Cesar Soto Grado's match report described the incident as a poor challenge, rather than an act of violence, meaning Mbappe could not serve anything more than a three-game ban.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have now handed out a one-game suspension for Mbappe - the minimum punishment for the incident.

Mbappe will, therefore, miss the visit from Athletic Club at the weekend but will be free to return against Getafe and then, perhaps most importantly, will be cleared to take on Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on April 26.

Antonio Blanco, the Alaves player on the receiving end of Mbappe's challenge, revealed after the game that the France international had privately apologised for the tackle and was happy to move on.

"He's obviously hurt, disappointed by what happened," Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed in the build-up to Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal.

"He's trained very well, very motivated... and, obviously, we need him tomorrow. Because this isn't just about defending; we have to score. And he's done a lot this season. We need him tomorrow more than ever."
