TheMarch 24 episode of WWE RAWfeatured the debut of El Grande Americano, who is just Chad Gable in a mask, but the character immediately got backlash from the Mexican wrestling community. This led to WWE changing his hometown from Gulf of Americato Gulf of Mexico, and now Pat McAfee has explained the reason behind the change.
While speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Michael Cole explained that El Grande Americano has now been relocated to the Gulf of Mexico after previously being announced as hailing from the Gulf of America, saying, Well, hes been relocated now to the Gulf of Mexico. This was met with some pushback from the co-hosts, who still claimed El Grande Americano hailed from the Gulf of America.
Pat McAfee added that the change was due to a processing error when El Grande Americano was born. That original name was listed by mistake, which is why it reverted back.
McAfee clarified it was just a clerical issue, and despite the confusion, El Grande Americano isnt a month and a half old; hes a full-grown adult. As for where hes really from, nobody knows for sure.
Even though the situation was meant to be funny, WWEs quick change shows how important cultural sensitivity is in todays wrestling world. El Grande Americano might be a fictional character, but giving him a fake hometown didnt sit right with fans who respect Lucha Libre and its traditions.
Nonetheless, El Grande Americano will be squaring off against Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 41 in a singles match, so we will have to wait and see if he will be able to pull off the upset win.
