Liverpool are closing in on their second Premier League title, and their status as champions could be confirmed as soon as Wednesday night.
While Arne Slot's side have struggled to convince in recent weeks as they did during an imperious first half to 2024/25, Arsenal's inability to seize upon any slip-ups or put any serious pressure on the Reds has allowed Liverpool to serenely stroll to the championship.
This was meant to be a year of transition for the Reds in the wake of Jurgen Klopp's exit, but Mohamed Salah's dazzling campaign has inspired the Merseyside club to glory in what's been a tumultuous campaign off-the-field as a result of three contract disputes.
Liverpool will continue with Salah starring down the right and Virgil van Dijk marshalling their defence, but Trent Alexander-Arnold looks poised to move on with Real Madrid lurking. Still, the right-back left supporters with a lasting memory by crashing home the winning goal at Leicester on Sunday.
The Reds are closing in, and here's why they can win the title without kicking a ball on Wednesday night.
Why Liverpool can win the Premier League title on Wednesday night
Alexander-Arnold's strike at King Power Stadium means Liverpool boast a 13-point lead at the summit with five games to play. They're next in action on Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, and they'll be crowned champions with a victory.
However, their closest challengers Arsenal, are playing on Wednesday night due to Crystal Palace's participation in the FA Cup semi-finals this weekend. If they're beaten by the Eagles, the Reds will be confirmed as champions.
The Gunners will claim 81 points if they win their remaining five games, and Liverpool are currently on 79. If they lose to Palace, they can only reach 78. A draw just about keeps them in the hunt, but the Reds would only then require a point on Sunday.
While captain Van Dijk "expects" Arsenal to triumph in midweek, the Dutchman is preparing to host a potential celebration on Wednesday night:"I expect Arsenal to win at home but, yeah, if it doesn't happen then I think it would be nice to be together," he revealed afterSunday's win at Leicester.
"So however that may look, we will discuss in the next couple of days. But if Arsenal just win that game, as they probably expect they will do against a very good Crystal Palace, then we have to do our job at the weekend."
Liverpool's sole title success in 2020 was confirmed via the failure of their closest rivals at the summit, with Manchester City losing 2-1 at Chelsea while the Reds squad gathered at Formby Hall Hotel to celebrate an emphatic triumph.
