
NFL legend and former WCW star Steve Mongo McMichael has died at the age of 67 following a hard-fought battle with ALS. FOX 32 Sports confirmed his passing on Wednesday, just hours after it was announced that McMichael had entered hospice care.
Ric Flair, one of McMichaels closest friends and fellow Four Horsemen member, shared a heartfelt message on Twitter/X: The world just lost the incredible Steve Mongo McMichael! He was my best friend through it all! An amazing athlete and human being! I have the fondest memories working with him, and this is an extremely heartbreaking loss for me! I love you, Mongo! You fought one hell of a battle! Rest in peace, my friend!
McMichaels legacy stretches far beyond the wrestling ring. A dominant defensive lineman, he was a key figure on the 1985 Chicago Bears team that won the Super Bowl and became one of the most iconic defenses in NFL history. In 2024, he was finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Famea moment he celebrated at home, surrounded by loved ones.
In the wrestling world, Mongo made his debut at WrestleMania 11 in 1995, standing beside Lawrence Taylor. He later transitioned to WCW, first as an announcer and then as a full-time wrestler. In 1996, he joined The Four Horsemen, aligning with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and Chris Benoit, and bringing his hard-hitting football mentality into the squared circle.
McMichaels fight with ALS began in 2021, and despite the physical toll, he remained surrounded by support from fans, former teammates, and wrestling peers alike.
