7. Mariah May 26yo AEW
One of the top stars in AEW over the past year finds her way at number seven on our list. Mariah May, who some barely knew her, or only knew her by name, changed the landscape of womens wrestling in 2024. In her first year in AEW, May not only become AEW Womens World Champion, but she created such a buzz with her friendship/rivalry with Toni Storm that it was easily the best story telling out of all professional wrestling last year.
May started her career in wrestling in 2018 where she was a ring announcer first. She started her in-ring career in 2019 on the British wrestling indie scene such as RevPro. She did do a few shows in the United States indies before making her way to Japan for her breakout in STARDOM. Here is where her in-ring talent started to take shape as she formed a stable named Club Venus with Mina Shirakawa and Xia Brookside. Her closeness with Shirakawa has actually been shown during time in AEW. May would win gold in STARDOM with Shirakawa as the became the Goddess of Stardom Champions.
May would make the most of her time in Stardom for about two years before arriving full time in AEW. She started as Toni Storms protege and stuck out with her through thick and thin until the time came to pull the turn of the century. During Mays time with Storm, Storms character as the Timeless one often overlooked May. Eventually, Storm would stop overlooking May as just a warm body and started embracing her as someone she truly loved. May would win the Owen Hart Cup in 2024 and that is the exact moment where things took a turn, and the masterpiece started. While celebrating the night of her win, May viciously attacked Storm with a high heel show on the AEW stage. This left Storm a bloody mess.
The two would have a rivalry for the ages which included three major championship matches. May would win the AEW Womens World Title from Storm in their first match. Storm would win it back in her home country of Australia a few months later and go on to retain it after their Hollywood Ending final match. May has proven herself, in a pretty short amount of time, that she is ruthless not just in the ring but also on the mic. She is one of the best storytellers in womens wrestling today.
Currently, it is unsure at this time if May will re-sign with AEW or venture outside of the promotion to perhaps WWE. Her contract will be determined this year.
Its all about Mariah!
