Janel Grant isnt letting Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis, or WWE slow her down. Attorneys for the former WWE employee filed a fiery response on April 25 in the United States District Court of Connecticut, pushing back hard against the defendants efforts to block the start of discovery in her explosive lawsuit.
McMahon and the others have argued the case should be pushed into private arbitration, not fought out in a public courtroom, citing a nondisclosure agreement Grant previously signed. They also claimed discovery would be a waste of time and money if the judge later agrees to move the case out of court. But Grants team isnt buying it.
Defendants argue that this Court should stay discovery simply on the basis of a motion to compel arbitration that has not yet been filed, is not pending before this Court, and that the Court has explicitly instructed them not to renew at this time, her attorneys fired back. They added, An anticipated motion to compel arbitration that Defendants have not filed yet does not constitute good cause to stay discovery.
Grants legal team also pointed out that WWEs side hasnt shown good cause to stop the case from moving forward, blasting them for refusing to work on a discovery schedule and trying to duck administrative responsibilities. They even brought up serious allegations about how the nondisclosure agreement was signed under duress and coercion, and that some communications related to the situation may fall under the crime-fraud exception.
The stakes for discovery are massive. Grant is looking to get her hands on a wide range of WWE documents, including internal communications, records of alleged payments Vince McMahon made to multiple women, and company policies on sexual harassment. Shes also requesting travel records tied to McMahon, Laurinaitis, and Brock Lesnar.
While the Court hasnt ruled yet on whether this case will stay public or get pushed into private arbitration, Grants side is making it crystal clear they are ready for a fightand theyre not letting McMahons camp stall any longer.
